Outside the Aston Martin, weak fluorescent lights flickered at the entrance to the bathrooms.

“You sure you want to go in that?” Blythe asked. “Looks like they don’t care too much about the rest stops here.” Her eyes moved toward the cinderblock building and she nodded her head in its direction.

“I have no idea what you mean. It’s clearly a spa,” Ramone said, undoing his seatbelt. “Just a quick hot stone massage and I’ll be set for another ten hours.”

“Yeah, there’s probably some pretty big spiders in there. So, no thanks. Next gas station.” Marci said. “But I’m going to get out to stretch my legs.”

“I’ll just be a few minutes. Oh, and College?” he said, glancing over his shoulder at her.

“Yeah?” Marci asked.

“Thanks for turning the volume up on my spider fears.” He laughed, pushed the door open with his shoulder, and stepped out of the car.

The rest area was deserted except for a few Diesels that were likely staying over night, and two or three other cars that seemingly watched from the shadows. Otherwise there were no people. Electricity said the place wasn’t quite decommissioned. He caught himself shivering, and not just from the cold mountain temperatures. Down toward the freeway, the occasional sound of passing vehicles roared up to meet Ramone as he wandered across the pavement to the sidewalk. His body screamed at him for the abuse it had taken.

Twenty-four hours had barely elapsed. Twenty-four hours? Really? He shook his head. Hardly enough to recover completely. A mountain breeze slapped against his cheeks, bringing with it the fresh smell of juniper and dirt.

Inside one of the few stalls in the dirty, neglected bathrooms, Ramone sat on the toilet seat without taking down his pants.

A break, that was what he needed. Some time alone, even if it meant a grotesque bathroom beneath Bates Motel lighting.

How far away are you, you devil? How long till we meet once more?

He was being hunted and he didn’t like the sensation, but he refused to give in to it. Turn the tables. That was his plan. Gamble. Take a risk. Let him show up. The mistake they were making was in not bringing the full weight of their stupid operation to bear on him. Choppers. Tanks. Nuclear missiles.

He was Samuel Fucking Ramone. Underestimating him would be the last thing they did. Buy into the idea that because he was a man of thought, invention, and ingenuity, that he was otherwise simple when it came to strength and physical prowess? A weakling nerd-type?

He’d never thought of himself as a nerd, but he knew that a large portion of the world saw men like him as nerds. Weak men wearing pocket-protectors and burying their noses in calculators.

Ramone flexed his hands. He stared at them in the terrible lighting. A large—a really large—furry spider scurried across the floor near his Doc Martins. He jumped slightly. College was right. Spiders.

He stretched his back and felt the skin wrinkle where the scabs had formed from the lashing. It still smarted.
